What is a 16mm Flying Lead Solenoid Coil?
This is a coil that is designed to fit over a 16mm operator on a solenoid valve. It is the part that lifts the armature inside the operator tube of the solenoid valve when power is applied. They are essential to every solenoid valve.
How does a 16mm Flying Lead Solenoid Valve Coil work?
The coil is essentially a number of copper windings formed around the operator. When power is applied to the coil it creates an electro-magnetic field which lifts the armature inside the operator tube of the solenoid valve. This will then allow the valve to operate. Power is applied to the coil through the flying leads which is where your electrical cable is connected too. This has two wires (+ve, -ve or N, L) which are not polarity conscious.
Does the coil include a DIN plug?
No, this is a flying lead coil so it has no din plug. It only has two wires.
How do I know that this coil will suit my existing solenoid valve?
There are three critical components to sizing a solenoid coil to an existing valve. The first is the power of the coil. The power of the coil can be more than your valve requires but not less. The second is the operator diameter, the hole in the middle of the coil must suit the size of your operator so it can slide over the operator tube. It is best to have a snug fit so when the magnetic field is created it is transmitted straight onto your operator tube. This will also stop the coil from overheating. The third is the height of the coil. This must match the height of your operator. This is the distance that the magnetic field is created over and is crucial to the successful operation of your solenoid valve.
How long will my 16mm Flying Lead Solenoid Coil last?
Like any coil, this depends upon the usage case, duty cycle and external environment of the valve. If your valve is cycling every second, 24 hours a day, then its life will be shorter than one which is used once a day. Our coils are 100% duty rated which means they can operate continuously as long as the heat generated can be dissipated. The electrical supply to your coil can also determine its life cycle as over voltage and or voltage spikes can shorten it, the same as any electrical equipment.
What are typical uses of a 16mm Flying Lead Solenoid Coil ?
These are not used anywhere near as much as DIN plug style coils. They are still used in some applications however.
How do I wire and install my 16mm Flying Lead Solenoid Coil?
The good news is that our coils are not polarity conscious. This means that you can have DC positive and negative to either of the two wires or Neutral and Live if using AC power. There is no wire for the earth so this will either be achieved through your valve/pipework or running a seperate earth to the valve body similar. Double check the supply voltage is the same as what is specified on the coil before power is applied as this will potentially burn your coil if the voltage is higher than specified.
Why do we measure DC in Watts and AC in Volt Amps for solenoid coils?
Watts is the real power which is what the solenoid coil is using. This is straightforward in DC as it is calculated as Voltage x Current. However in AC there can be a phase difference where the voltage and current waveforms can be out of sync from either capacitive or inductive loads (solenoid coils are primarily inductive loads). This means that not all current flowing contributes to the solenoid coil. Therefore we use Volt Amperes which is the total load on the power source (whereas Watts would just be the power used by the coil).
How long will my product take to get to me?
This depends upon where you are based and the freight method chosen. If the express freight option is selected it is usually next day delivery to metropolitan areas in Australia for under 5kg. If free freight has been selected it will go by road freight which can be anywhere from 1 to 10 days depending upon your location. It usually averages 3 days. You can rely on us to do everything to the best of our ability to despatch your order the same day we receive it, this is what we strive to do.
What warranty do I get?
We have been manufacturing Solenoid Valves for over 30 years so we have a lot of experience at making a great coil. All of our products come standard with a 12 month warranty. The good news is we have very strict quality controls and all our coils leave our warehouse tested and inspected so there are rarely any issues. Also, once your coil is in and operating it will most likely continue to do so for a very long time barring any external factors.
